It was the top grossing film of 1967 and it launched the career of one of Hollywood’s most talented power houses, Dustin Hoffman. Of course, if Robert Redford hadn’t decided against doing the film, Dustin might not have had a chance. Redford reportedly turned down the role because he thought he was incapable of portraying the genuine naiveté of a character like Benjamin.
The poster for the film shows Dustin Hoffman framed by the shapely leg of Mrs. Robinson. A long lasting image if there ever was one. Except that the leg in the poster doesn’t belong to Anne Bancroft at all, it belongs to then-model Linda Grey (who incidentally went on to play the part in the musical in London).
The May-December romance between Dustin and Anne is actually, technically, only a May-July romance. Anne Bancroft is only 6 years older than Dustin himself.
