Donald Sutherland reportedly had little faith in the film doing well, so he turned down a share in the back end profits and chose instead a substantial upfront salary. I guess no one ever advised Mr. Sutherland about un-hatched chickens because the film was a considerable success, earning more than 100 million dollars U.S.
Barely a trend before the film, fraternity ‘toga’ parties became a smash sensation around the U.S after the films release. So, now you know who to blame for those horrendous photos taken by your college roommate of you dressed up in your star wars bed sheets with a plastic crown on your head .
Speaking of embarrassing college stories, sometimes it’s better to express rather than repress. After all it worked for the co-writer of Animal House. Chris Milller apparently based his National Lampoon short stories (which eventually gave way to the screenplay) on his own experiences at Dartmouth College in the early 60’s.
