Sometimes teenage murder and suicide just isn’t the barrel of laughing monkeys it’s meant to be. The original ending of the film, which had Veronica shooting JD and then blowing herself up with the school, was just a little too dark for the Hollywood studio types. So the director opted for a lighter, quasi-happier ending where Veronica survives, as does the school. So if you’re making your own studio checklist at home, it’s “Yay” on multiple murder and random teenage violence; and it’s “Nay” on destruction of academic institutions.

Did you know that Westerburg High School was so named because the lead singer of Winona Ryder’s favourite band (at the time) was The Replacements Paul Westerberg.

Remember when JD tells Veronica that the bullets used in the gun to shoot the jocks are only “ich liege”; bullets that merely pierce the skin? In reality, they were the ‘killin’ kind of bullets, and “ich liege” means ‘I’m lying’ in German.
